“PSALM 90:9 All our days pass away under your wrath; we finish our years with a moan.”
This is the oldest Psalm in the Bible. It was written by Moses during the 40yrs of wandering in the wilderness. There is much that we could profit from this Psalm. We will fix our attention on verse 9. Life is likened to a tale that is told not read. When this Psalm was written, reading materials were not common or plentiful as today. Consequently, there were quite a number of professional storytellers.
These were always welcomed in military camps and in towns or villages. This metaphor is a simple yet suggestive one. Let us learn:-
I. THERE ARE LONG TALES AND SHORT ONES.
So there are long lives and very short ones.
We should not measure life by years as we can measure a story by pages or inches.
It is what you put into life that counts.
It is what we put into our days and into our years that will decide the value of the life lived.
II. THERE ARE DULL TALES AND VERY INTERESTING ONES.
Some lives are very unattractive, but other lives are full of change and very exciting.
As you go to funerals when the life history is read, you can judge lives. Some life histories are hardly one page.
III. THERE ARE BAD TALES AND THERE ARE GOOD ONES.
Some lives are really bad, exerting a baneful influence.
Some other lives are full of blessings to all people.
Only one life to live, we should live useful and helpful lives.
IV. THERE ARE TALES THAT HAVE A
Some lives constantly produce nothing but evil.
Just like books, some books have produced great and beneficial results, but others you read and
you gain nothing.
Life of mission and purpose form a good story to tell.
V. HOW CAN MY LIFE BE AS A GOOD AND BENEFICIAL TALE?
There are three conditions:
1. You must have the right Author.
It takes a genius to produce a really great story.
If your life will be a good tale, one that will live on and on for generations. Only the Lord Jesus Christ can produce a life that is as good, useful and helpful tale.
We must be His workmanship, we cannot do this ourselves.
We must assign ourselves to His gracious and marvelous creative skill.
Like Jabez, we need to pray and ask the Lord to rewrite our story (I Chron.4:9-10)
Lord- Bless me Indeed,
Lord- Extend my territory.
Lord- Let your hand be upon me,
Lord- Keep me from trouble and from causing others trouble.
God granted Jabez prayer and changed his cause of history.
2. You must have the right Hero.
Every story or film or drama has a hero.
The quality of the book can be decided by the quality of its hero.
If Jesus Christ is the center and circumference of our lives then all is well.
3. Must have the Right object/ Purpose
A book without an object is likely to be a weak and watery one.
What is the purpose of your life?
Are you doing everything for the glory of God?
Westminster short catechism article # 1-“Man’s chief end is to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever.”
What kind of a tale is your life telling?
What is the object of your life?
Who are you living for? (Phil.1:21 – For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.).
