SERIES: BACK TO THE BASICS
TEXT: I JOHN 1:1-5
The first letter of John was written by John, the apostle son of Zebedee, one of the original twelve disciples of Jesus. He was known as “the one whom Jesus loved” (Jn.19:26,20:2). He was very close to Jesus Christ. He founded Churches, He wrote the Gospel of John, three letters of John and the Revelation. He spent some years exiled on the Island of Patmos for his belief. He wrote this letter towards the end of 1st century AD. He was more than 90yrs of age, and the only surviving apostle.
The church was now invaded by a heresy known as Gnosticism. Gnosticism was a real enemy of Christianity, it is still a great enemy today. Gnosticism taught that all material or matter is essentially evil only spirit is good. Today Liberalism maintains that there is a spark of the divine in everyone and that each person is to develop that spark of good. The opposite of Gnosticism is Agnosticism which hold that God is unknown and probably unknowable. Today there is a lot of Agnosticism in the church and Christians colleges. Gnosticism says “ I know”, this group of people taught that they had superior knowledge which simple Christians did not possess. They considered themselves super-saints. John wrote this letter with a four fold purpose;
(1) To promote fellowship (I john 1:3).
(2) Provide Joy (1:4).
(3) prevent sin (2:1).
(4) Provide Assurance (5:13)
Let us learn about three things about real Christianity:
I. REAL CHRISTIANITY IS JESUS CHRIST REVEALED (I John 1:2)
∙ John tells us that Jesus Christ is eternally real-Christ was in the beginning.
∙ John tells us he was an eye witness. He uses three words to describe His experience with Christ.
1. That which we Heard,
2. That which we saw,
3. That which we Touched.
∙ John wants us to know that he was a personal witness of what Jesus Christ was, what He did and what He said.
∙ John tells us that there is no secret-Christ has been revealed in the world of life-Jesus.
∙ John is very clear as to what he heard, seen and touched.
∙ John concludes that Jesus Christ is God himself, he is life, He is eternal life from the Father (V.2)
II. REAL CHRISTIANITY IS JESUS CHRIST EXPERIENCED (v.3-4)
∙ Real Christianity is rooted in a Revelation, but it is realized in a Relationship.
∙ It does not matter how much you know about Jesus Christ, if you do not know Him personally-then.
∙ John had an encounter with Christ and therefore knew Him face to face.
∙ There are no second-generation Christians, every one must experience Christ for his/her self.
III. REAL CHRISTIANITY IS JESUS CHRIST PROCLAIMED (v.5)
∙ The Christian life is meant to be shared.
∙ The Christian life is worth sharing with everybody (Matt.28:18-20)
♦ Real Christianity is determined by what you believe about Jesus Christ.
♦ Jesus Christ is revealed in the bible, is experienced by new life from within and in fellowship with God and other believers, He is proclaimed with Joy.
♦ Do you really have the real deal!!. Christ in you, the hope of Glory.
