TEXT:II CORINTHIANS 6:14-7:1
We are living in a time when connectedness is the rule of the day. With our cellphones, our pagers, our internet we are always connected to those around us. To be connected to the loved ones and to those who need you is one thing. But there is another kind of connectedness which is not so good. Today you hear words like, tolerance, acceptance, openness, seeker friendly, inclusivity. The big idea here is togetherness, being connected on human level. There is a big push in this world for people to be one, to come under one umbrella, one world, one love, one society, one church, one Kenya, one youth etc. We have even a hotel called “Connections”.
God did not call us to be inclusive but exclusive, we are called to be different from the world. Uniformity is not always God’s way. The life of separation was sorely lacking in Corinth.
Let us stay separate in a connected world:-
I. WE ARE MARKED BY SEVERAL CONTRASTS(II Cor.6:14-16)
A. There is to be a contrast in our walk.
∙ God’s children are to be different from this world in the way they conduct their lives.
∙ We are to be righteous, not wicked, purity is our portion.
∙ We are to put on Christ not the world. (Phil 1:27,Rom.13:14)
B. There is to be a contrast in our wisdom.
∙ Light and darkness can have no fellowship.
∙ A life-governed by the word of God has no shared ground with life governed by the flesh, the world or the devil.
C. There is to be a contrast in our worship.
∙ There is no common ground between Jesus Christ and the devil (Belial)
∙ Between him who confess Jesus Christ and the one who denies Him.
∙ The idols of the world and the flesh have no business in the temple of God.
∙ There is disharmony between Christ and everything evil.
II.WE ARE MANAGED BY SPECIFIC COMMANDS. (II Cor.6:14,17) A. We are commanded to be segregated (V.14)
∙ In Deut.22:10, The Ox and the donkey were very different animals. This command pertains to People.
∙ The Ox was clean, the donkey was unclean.
∙ Both possess very different natures.
∙ “Unequal Yoke” is a military word, it means “stay within your own ranks”
B. We are commanded to be Separated (V.17)
∙ This command pertains to practices. We are to refuse to walk with the world (people) and are to refuse to walk like the world.
∙ We are a “Called out people” Church means “The called out ones” “Ecclesia”-we are different.
III. WE ARE MOVED BY SATISFYING CONSOLATIONS (II.Cor.6:17-18)
A. There is the consolation of His favor.
∙ Those who walk the separated life have God’s promise.- “He will Receive them”-Treat them with favor.
B. There is the consolation of His Fatherhood.
∙ I will be a Father to you and you will be sons and daughters of Mine.
∙ The Fatherhood of God to us applies only to those saved and those who walk with God.
IV. WE ARE MOTIVATED TO STEADFAST CONVICTION.
A.. We are motivated to a clean walk.
∙ Let us cleanse ourselves of all filthiness of flesh and spirit.
∙ Filthiness of the flesh means those external acts of wickedness (Gal.5:19-21)
∙ Filthiness of the Spirit would refer to internal attitudes of the heart that leads to external sin. (Matt.15:18-19)
B. We are Motivated to a consecrated walk.
∙ “Perfecting Holiness” means completing or getting the whole mind of Christ into the soul” (Gal.2:20, Col.1:27)
∙ Cease to be driven by the world, the flesh and the devil.
∙ Resist and avoid sin in all its forms (I Cor.10:13)
∙ Set the “fear of God” before your very eyes.
♦ Stay Separated in this connected world.
♦ What you allow in moderation today, you will do in excess tomorrow.
♦ Draw near to God. God will draw near to you.
